No quick bounce back in the autumn term

Nurseries and pre-schools anticipate average occupancy below 60% at the start of the autumn term, pointing to a long road to recovery.

The latest wave of Ceeda's Covid-19 Tracker study asked providers to forecast September occupancy based on the management information currently available. Nurseries and pre-schools forecast average occupancy of 57.5% at the start of the autumn term, with 45% of settings expecting to fill half their capacity or less. Occupancy at the time of the survey averaged 46%, a slight fall on the previous wave in early July.

Occupancy stagnated at 35% in childminding provision, with no change seen over the last four survey waves. One in five childminders expect September occupancy to return to normal for the time of year (21%), 39% think numbers will be slightly down and 38% anticipate significantly lower numbers.
